Magical thinking and challenging choices for children and their adults
by Ronald A. Kay
40 pages; 10.25 x 8.25 inches
 ISBN Paperback: 978-1-892076-98-4. Price: $9.99
 ISBN-Hardcover: 978-1-892076-99-1. Price: $12.99

“This book has two audiences in mind: the child, of course, but also the adult. The book’s interactive aspect creates two-way communication between adults and the child, and between the child and the words.

Two types of thinking are woven throughout the text: magical and logical. Magical thinking allows a child to imagine and believe in fantastical things like fairies and talking trees. Logical thinking allows them to make real choices and provides the rational reasons behind those choices.”
–Ronald A. Kay

Let’s just say you could be anything you want today,
In some wondrous, dreamy, magical thinking way!
What would you rather be …
A Monkey or a Tree? A Mountain or a Sea?
A Bird that soars, or a mighty Dinosaur?
A Dragon snoring, or a Tiger roaring?
An old brown Shoe, or the same old You?
What do you say? Are you ready to play?

“I started teaching Language Arts at a school within a Level V lockdown treatment center for teenage girls eight years ago. I had been asked to substitute by someone who knew me only through my spoken word performances. I told her I wanted to visit before committing. I wanted to see if these locked-down girls had red eyes and bit.

I sat in the back of the classroom one morning while students read “list poems” of ten things that get them high besides drugs. An adorable Megan, with a phenomenal head of auburn hair that she tossed about like a mink cape, stood up and read her list. It was loud and enormous with honesty and emotion. It roared around the room like a funnel cloud, sucking me in hard. I took the job. Friends ask why I want to publish these poems, to share something so ugly? I say they’re documentary, memoir, love notes and celebrations. They’re for you to hear. They’re for you to see.”

Whatever happened to the Sixties? Well, it headed north from California to the Central Oregon Coast, invading the Gilmore Hotel—“the only flop house with an ocean view and a waiting list.”

A century ago, the Gilmore Hotel was a landmark for luxurious living in Nye Beach. By the 1960s, the hotel provided low-cost housing for fishing and service workers, and retirees. These are their stories—from the Gilmore Hotel’s last days—told by one of its residents.

Gilmore by the Sea contains 16 short stories with their accompanying comics, plus the entire novella, “The Two,” the true story of the Heaven’s Gate UFO Cult headquartered on the Oregon Coast.

The Unnatural Aging of Cheese is a collection of absolutely true humorous short stories that recount the painfully slow maturation process of one New Jersey slacker (nicknamed “Cheese”) as he transitions from wild party animal to mild-mannered parent and bumbling homeowner.

The book begins just after Cheese gets expelled from an expensive boarding school and goes to live with his single, airline pilot father on the Jersey Shore. Cheese drinks up the Christmas tree fund, burns a couple cars, flunks out of two colleges, gets exiled to Oregon, takes a road trip to Mardi Gras, digs a grave, scrubs a cat’s butt, and suffers a voodoo curse. And that’s just the beginning.

The book is a work of fiction where the characters, places, and incidents are purported to be the product of the author’s imagination. But as Berger-Kiss says, “Aren’t all satires based on facts?”

Secret Memoirs of a Born-Again Preacher can be read as a how-to book to improve your ability to lie, cry on cue, swindle the masses out of dollars, and swindle the wealthy out of their millions – money being the source of Power. “Exploitation of those under you has to be done sensibly,” the Reverend Richard Dink advises, “so they don’t rebel.”

The Reverend ends up as one of the wealthiest men in the world, Vice President of the United States, and head of the new Office of Religious Affairs in the White House. But here, in his totally honest memoir, he provides the tricks, the secrets, even the words to say when your hand is found in the cookie jar. “To achieve ultimate power, mix religion and politics,” he tells his readers. “That’s where most of the truly great psychopaths are found. The best always hide behind God.”

Author Andrés Berger-Kiss has dedicated the book to all those who have been bamboozled.

“The poems in Diane Averill’s new collection range over a wide and various territory — satirical and lyrical, sensuous and austere — and show the keen eye and precision of language that have always characterized her work. Clearly, this is the work of a poet at the top of her game.” — Vern Rutsala, author of The Moment’s Equation.

“In turns mythic, sexual, and searingly satirical, Diane Averill’s voice is invariably sensuous and observant. Giving us the ‘the gift of time/ stopping for awhile,’ her numinous vision of the natural world shines from each page.”— Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet Laureate.

Diane Averill’s first book, Branches Doubled Over With Fruit was a finalist for the 1991 Oregon Book Award, as was her second book, Beautiful Obstacles.
