 Thirteen students, aged 7 through 10, participated in a week-long poetry workshop. “These young writers sculpted ocean observations into similes. They created their own place of bliss and then turned free, descriptive writing into a pantoum (a form of Thai poetry). They personified colors and emotions. They walked through Newport, pencils and notebooks in hand, observing and recording tourists and locals. They wrote chants inspired by Anne Waldman’s long poem, Fast Speaking Woman. They practiced with a keyboard beat and a mike. We even did yoga every day. I was so impressed by the language skills, imagination, boldness, generosity, and the spirit of these beach kids.” – Instructor Leanne Grabel. |
